Birchell Berna Harrison Sr., 78, of East Rollins Street, died Monday evening at Johnson City Medical Center after a brief illness.

He retired from the Pet Milk Co. in 1987 and was a greeter at Wal-Mart for nine years.

Mr. Harrison was a member of Mount Tabor United Methodist Church.

He started the gospel quartet, "The Gospel Light Quartet," and after the death of Jack Ricker, who sang in the quartet, he began singing with "The Harvest Time Quartet."
Later, he sang bass with the "Heavenly Journey Quartet."

His family noted that he and his sister, Betty Riddle, wrote a number of songs. One of his favorites, which was also his testimony, was "Jesus, Hear My Plea."

Survivors, in addition to his sister, include his wife of 59 years: Rose Pehlvinian Harrison; his son and daughter-in-law: Birchell "Buck" Harrison Jr. and his wife, Barbara Harrison; his daughter and son-in-law: Mary Elizabeth and Gary Carter; three grandchildren: Tim Harrison, Terri Harrison Price, and Sean Carter; two stepgrandchildren: Michael Taylor and Kim Hankins; 12 great-grandchildren; his brother-in-law: Hubert Riddle of Greeneville; a sister-in-law and her husband: Helen and Jack Mekjian of Farmington, Mich.; a special aunt: Lizzie Harrison of Greeneville; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was a son of the late Arnold and Beulah Ricker Harrison.

The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. today at Rose Hill Funeral Home.

The funeral service will be held at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon in the funeral home chapel. The Rev. Roy Fowler and the Rev. Richard Long will officiate and Billy Collier will give the eulogy.

Interment will follow in GreeneLawn Memory Gardens.

Pallbearers will be Mark Higgins, Minnis Lamons, Jeff Campbell, Billy Collier, and Clyde Collins.

Honorary pallbearers will be Gordon Burger, "Timer" White, Bill Hagie, Dr. Joe Austin, Jim Morgan, Magdy Hefnawy, Ray Watson, Fred Bowers and Tommy Haun
