JOSHUA O. HOWE
His Biography Read by Rev. Steele at the Funeral Service

The following biographical sketch was read at the funeral of Joshua O. Howe by Dr. John E. Steele:

Joshua O. Howe was born September 1st, 1826, and died March 26, 1895, being 68 years 6 months and 25 days old.

His father, Joshua O. Howe, and mother, Lucinda A. Howe, moved from Maryland to Kentucky and from Kentucky to Bloomington in 1819 having been two of the earliest residents of this place. They had four children born to them: Mrs. Elizabeth Howe Watts, Mrs. Louisa Howe Maxwell, James M. Howe and Joshua O. Howe. Mrs. Maxwell is now the only surviving member of the family.

Joshua O. Howe was married to Margaret Abel, daughter of the late Elias Abel, Dec. 12, 1855. Of three children born to them, Irene, Joseph and Jesse, Mrs. Irene Burford and Jesse Howe are living.

Mr. Howe was not a member of the church, but one who knew him well said he had kept the faith of his father's and mother's church, that he never forgot the fourth commandment, but always remembered the Sabbath day to keep it holy.

Four years ago last January he was stricken with paralysis. From this he partially recovered but remained all that time an invalid but always a most patient sufferer.

Three weeks ago Sunday his last illness began by a complication of troubles which ended in death Tuesday afternoon at fifteen minutes of 4 o'clock.
