Alex married Sarah (Bailey) Clevenger, widow of a cousin (Arch Clevenger) who lost his life as a Confederate soldier during the Civil War. Alex and Sarah's children were Loranzo, Richard, Isaac and Morgan (all shown in the 1888 photo to the right, courtesy of Free-Clevenger family researcher JoAnn FREE Brotherton).

When the 1880 census was taken, Sarah had died during the past year. Catherine Holloway, 36, (daughter of Joseph Holloway and Sarah Clevenger) was serving as resident housekeeper. Loranzo was 14; Richard, 12; Isaac, 10; and Morgan, 2. Step-daughter Martha, Sarah's daughter by a previous marriage, was also listed.

Loranzo married Melvina "Mattie" Reid. They started a family in Cocke County before moving to Texas, where an older 2nd cousin, Samuel Clevenger, was living. Loranzo (Loranzo Clyde "L.C.") and Mattie are buried in Coke County, Texas. Richard married Mollie Holloway and raised a family in the Carson Springs Community. Isaac married Lucinda Bryant. They raised a family in the Lower English Creek Community. Morgan married Fronia Sprouse in Cocke County, and they moved to Texas.

Alex and brother Isaac (not to be confused with son Isaac) served in the Union Army during the Civil War, while many of their cousins fought for the Confederacy. National Archives records indicate that a headstone provided for deceased Union Civil War Veterans was installed after Alex's death in 1895 on his grave in "Clevenger family cemetery near Newport, Tenn." That stone (photographed in the spring of 2013 and shown above) is still standing.

On Nov. 19, 1891 , Alex married Eliza Bridges, a daughter of Lawson and Plassie Bridges. Rev. Marion Free performed the wedding ceremony. (Lawson had died while serving as a Confederate soldier in Mississippi.) Alex and Eliza were married 4 years before he died at age 55. They had one child, daughter Lillie, who was 2 years old when her father died. Lillie married William Thomas of Cocke County.

Eliza was living in Whitesburg (Hamblen Co.) with son Dearis Bridges (father unknown) when she died.

NOTE: Alex's first wife, Sarah Bailey, and his second wife, Eliza Jane Bridges, probably were related. Eliza Jane's mother's (Plessie Bridges') maiden name was also Bailey. Eliza Jane may have been Sarah's niece.
