Born in Gortmacrane, County Derry, near Kilrea, to Alexander Dempsey and Nancy Patterson. He was the fifth of seven children.
In 1876 his parents sailed for Canada with their five surviving children, settling in Maitland, Augusta Township, Ontario.
On 5 November 1902 William married Laura Ann Barton in Augusta. After the death of his parents he moved to Pittsburgh with his oldest son in 1923, looking for work. Eight months later his wife moved the younger children to Ogdensburg NY where daughter Reta found work.
Sadly his wife Laura died in 1926 and two sons joined their father where he was working for Pittsburgh Glass. Daughter Reta, married, remained in New York.
Additional children include Mansel Edward b. 1914 and Kenneth B. b. 1916.
