According to the 1870 Census, the Collins and McCarthy families were living in the same hotel, same floor, in Martinsburg, while the men worked for the Railroad.
By 1880, the Census shows the McCarthy family had moved to Kansas City, Missouri. The Collins had settled in Liberty Township.
A few years later, on April 8, 1883, when she was 16, Ellen Collins married John Thomas McCarthy in Blue Springs, Jackson, Missouri.
They are buried together in St. Mary's Cemetery, Kansas City, Missouri.
