Barton and Origin Mowry were Mormons who came to San Francisco on the Good Ship Brooklyn in 1846 and settled in Washington Township in an area that came to be known as Mowry's Landing. They owned a steamship called the Neptune which made regular trips to and from San Francisco transporting grain grown on farms here.

Barton Mowry, had converted to the Mormon faith. He, his wife and 2 sons sailed on the Good Ship Brooklyn from NY to Yerba Buena, now San Francisco. It took 6 months. The story is told in a book entitled "Sam Brannan and the Golden Fleece." Brannan was the church elder in charge of the 220 LDS passengers. He founded the first settlement, Calistoga, in the heart of Napa Valley, California. California was still part of Mexico in 1846, but the Bear Flag Revolt started about this same time. Of course, the California Gold Rush started in 1849. All in all, an interesting time in US history and the development of the US.
