When and Where Was Louis Ferrea Born?

Louis' widow, Olga, mistakenly reported his birth as "1879" instead of "1878" and his birthplace as "Italy" instead of "California." The 1900 Federal Census (1638 San Jose Avenue, San Francisco, San Francisco, California, supervisor's district no. 1, enumeration district 14, sheet 12, 36th assembly district, dwelling house 225 (FHL Film 1240103)) states that Louis was born in "Aug 1878" in "California." However, the California State Board of Health, Bureau of Vital Statistics Standard Certificate of Death (number 14-037776) states that his birth was on 13 August 1879 in Italy. The Italian birthplace is entirely possible but unlikely; possible because a number of Italians in the fruit business in San Francisco in that era went back and forth a number of times between San Francisco and Italy, unlikely both because all other evidence seems to point to a California birthplace and because the informant giving the information for the death certificate was his widow, Olga, who simply may not have known for sure. No evidence has been found that Louis' parents, Giuseppe and Virginia, ever went back to Italy at any time after they arrived in the United States. The fact that their first son, Joseph, was christened in San Francisco shortly after his 1876 birth attests to his having been born there, as the records state. The entry for Joseph made on 9 June 1900 in the 1900 Federal Census states he was born in March of 1875 in California (1900 Federal Census, 1638 San Jose Avenue, San Francisco, San Francisco, California, supervisor's district no. 1, enumeration district 14, sheet 12, 36th assembly district, dwelling house 225, FHL Film 1240103). Giuseppe and Virginia's third child, Elizabeth, was christened in San Francisco a few weeks after her 1880 birth there. The first appearance of his own name in the Great Register of Voters (for 1900 (FHL Film 1001553) refers to him at age twenty-one as having registered to vote but never having naturalized. And the 1900 Federal Census, as stated above, reports what Louis himself stated to the enumerator (a "California" birth).

It is safe to conclude that Louis was born in 1878 rather than 1879 because the weight of evidence tends in that direction. Although his death certificate states he was born in "1879" in "Italy" (information reported by his widow), the 1900 Federal Census reports his birth as "August 1878."
