According to his obituary:
Sir Samuel Rowe was - "a handsome, square-built man, of rough but engaging manners, with a genial smile and a remarkable red beard. The natives used to call him ‘old red breeches', for he was used to don a pair of scarlet trousers when on the warpath as a sign that he meant business". With a rather generous turn of eulogy, it continues, "he has undoubtedly had a greater influence in West African affairs than any other living man, and it will be difficult to find anyone who can hope to rival him".
