Roger Patrick McElhiney, 65, of Lebanon passed away Friday at Samaritan Lebanon Community Hospital.

Roger was born in Lebanon, the son of Albert and LaVada (Austin) McElhiney. He lived in Lebanon throughout his childhood until moving to Grangeville, Idaho, in the early 1960s. He enlisted in the Navy in 1964 and served as a helicopter door gunner in Vietnam with Helicopter Attack (Light) Squadron Three, HA(L)-3. He continued his military career and retired as a chief aviation mechanic in 1984. He then moved back to Lebanon, where he had resided since. He worked for the Lebanon Nut Growers for a short time. He then began working for the city of Lebanon in maintenance, where he worked for nearly 20 years.

Roger was a member of the American Legion Post 51, past commander of the VFW No. 3437 in Sweet Home, past officer of AM VETS Post 13, seam squirrel of MOC No. 20 and a member of the HA(L)-3 Seawolf Association.

He enjoyed going fishing with his brother or his grandson, was caretaker of Rock Hill Cemetery for many years, loved spending time with his family, enjoyed watching football and golf on television, and enjoyed tinkering with automobiles and equipment.

He married Wilma Wirth in Lebanon on Aug. 1, 1994.

He is survived by his wife, Wilma of Lebanon; daughters Michelle McElhiney and fiancé Larry Hicks of Cascadia and Erica McElhiney of Lebanon; son John McElhiney of Fort Worth, Texas; stepson Tim Braith of Garden Grove, Calif.; brother Mike McElhiney of Lebanon; sister Leslie and husband Harold Scott of Lebanon; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many extended family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Terrance McElhiney (Memorial# 26431651) and James Koenig (Memorial# 53296221).

Roger was also inducted into the Navy Combat Aircew Roll Of Honor in 2010.
