Joan (Patterson) Gates, 74, beloved wife of George W. Gates of South Windsor, died at St. Francis Hospital.

Born to the late Samuel and Anna (Brennenstuhl) Patterson, she had lived in South Windsor for many years. Joan graduated from Bennington High School, Bennington, in 1948 and from Pittsfield General Hospital School of Nursing, Pittsfield, Mass. in 1951.

She had been employed as a registered nurse for Putman Memorial Hospital, Bennington, Jackson Memorial Hospital, Miami, Fla., Hartford Hospital, Hartford, and, before retiring, at Prospect Hill Nursing Home, East Windsor.

Her interests included church activities at Wapping Community Church, South Windsor, and in the United Methodist Church in Wells, Vt. She also enjoyed craft fairs, crossword puzzles and taking photographs. She spent time at Lake St. Catherine in Wells and Hutchinson Island in Florida.

Besides her husband of 49 years, George, she leaves a daughter, Debra Gates of South Windsor; a son, Craig Gates of Wallingford; a sister, Shirley Welch of Bennington; a brother-in-law, Edward Gates of Bennington; three sisters-in-law, Eleanor Pulver, Barbara Bushee and Joan Gates, all of Wells; and many beloved cousins, nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews and friends.
