PORTLAND — Dr. Robert Sandilands, 86, formerly of Salem died Sunday.

He was born in Magherafelt, Ireland, and married Maria Neufeldt in 1939. She died in 1975.

He was a medical missionary for the Presbyterian church in Cameroun from 1946 to 1978, mostly at Bafia Hospital.

He was decorated by the Camerous government four times, including receiving the Knight of Legion of Honor. He was director of the rehab center at Fairview Training Center in the early 1970s and director of emergency room services at St. John’s Hospital in Longview, Wash.

He went to Thailand as a relief doctor in Cambodian refugee camps.

Survivors include his sons, Dr. John of Sherwood, James of Lake Oswego, Philip of Salem; daughters, Carol Moore of Everett, Wash., and Ruth Decker of Tualatin; sister, Marguerita Bramblet of Tacoma, Wash.; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be 3 p.m. Thursday at Salt Creek Cemetery in Dallas. Memorial services will be held later. Arrangements are by Bollman Funeral Home in Dallas. Contributions: Missions Committee of Calvary Presbyterian Church in Portland.
