WEST CHATHAM - Margaret Jordan Dempsey, 89, of West Chatham, MA died peacefully on Sunday
at Emerson Hospital in Concord, MA after a brief illness.

Mrs. Dempsey grew up in Belmont, MA and attended St. Agnes School in Arlington, MA, graduating from Belmont High School in 1940. During World War II, she worked as an executive assistant at the MIT Radiation Laboratory in Cambridge and traveled to England with the team that developed and tested the first radar. After the war, Mrs. Dempsey worked at the newly formed United Nations in New York City.

In 1948, Mrs. Dempsey married Martin J. Dempsey of Shenandoah, PA and they moved to Pennsylvania, eventually settling in Broomall where they had two sons. The Dempsey's were summer residents of West Chatham from 1958 to 1971, when they moved to Chatham permanently after Mr. Dempsey's retirement from the IRS.

For three decades, Mrs. Dempsey sang bass as a member of The Cape Chordaires women's barbershop chorus, frequently performing around the Cape. Mrs. Dempsey was also a long time communicant at Holy Redeemer Church in Chatham.

Mrs. Dempsey is predeceased by her husband in 1997 and survived by two sons, Martin Joseph Dempsey of Las Vegas, NV and James Jordan Dempsey of Boxborough, MA; two sisters, Cynthia Bannon of Bloomington, IN and Sally Sallaway of Conesus, NY and two grandchildren.

Visitation will be at the Nickerson Funeral Home, 87 Crowell Rd. in Chatham from 2-4PM, Thursday February 16th. A funeral Mass will be held at 11AM on Friday February 17th at Holy Redeemer on Highland Ave in Chatham. Burial will follow at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.
