Spanish Politician. He was the founder of the Spanish fascist group “Falange Española.” He was the the son of Miguel Primo de Rivera, the military dictator of Spain between 1923 and 1930. He studied law and became involved in politics making speeches to defend the policies of his father. He won a seat in the Cortes as a delegate for Jerez de la Frontera. He also founded two right-wing newspapers, “Fe” in 1934 and “Arriba” in 1935. In October of 1933 he established the Falange Española. Falange, which distinguished itself from other fascist groups by its great emphasis on national tradition, particularly the Christian traditions of Spain. In its manifesto published later that year ,the Falange condemned socialism, Marxism, republicanism and capitalism and proposed that Spain should become a Fascist state similar to the one established by Benito Mussolini in Italy. In 1934 the Spanish Falange merged with the JONS or Juntas de Ofensiva Nacional Sindicalista, and combined violent rebellions with electoral propaganda, but in the general election that took place in February of 1936, the Falange won only 0.7% of the vote. In view of its violent nature, the Republican Party declared Jose Antonio's Falange illegal and imprisoned him on July 6, 1936. Primo de Rivera fully supported Franco's military rebellion in July of 1936 against the republican government, and after the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War, the Falange became the dominant political movement of the Nationalists. The Republicans held him in captivity until they executed him. His execution, when he was just 33 years old, made him into a hero for those fighting against the Republic.
