Evelyn R. Bergdoll, 83, passed away quietly at her home in Muncie with her family by her side.

Mrs. Bergdoll was born to Paul and Nellie Gilpin in Connellsville, PA, but moved to Dunkirk as a teenager. She married James H. Bergdoll in 1945 and lived on "Beaver Hill Farm" north of Dunkirk until Jim retired from Kerr Glass in 1982. At that time, the couple relocated to Muncie and spent their retirement years enjoying bluegrass music, square dancing, and traveling. In addition to her primary role as homemaker, Mrs. Bergdoll worked as a bookkeeper and secretary.

Whenever you visited her home, she would always send you off with a plate of her original orange cookies or a jar of her famous strawberry jam. Evelyn Bergdoll was an award-winning cook who was most comfortable in her apron, in her kitchen, making something special to share with family and friends. In the preface of the handwritten cookbooks she presented to all of her grandchildren, she writes, "When I am no longer around, may my memories live forever as the aroma of my favorite recipes fill your kitchen."

Mrs. Bergdoll is a member of the Albany United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her husband or more than sixty years, James H. Bergdoll; son, James Bergdoll, Jr. (wife-Mitsu), Dunkirk; three daughters, Nancy Ewald (husband-Robert), Columbus, OH, Darlene Bergdoll, New York City, and Pat Smith (husband-Jerry), Yorktown; brother, Paul Gilpin (wife-Ruthie), Lancaster, OH; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Don Gilpin; and two sisters, Grace Maxwell and Mildred (Sally) McMillan.

Funeral services for Mrs. Bergdoll will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday at Garden View Funeral Home, 10501 North State Road 3, Muncie. Friends may greet the family from 2-4 p.m. and again from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home. Entombment will be held in the Gardens of Memory Mausoleum. Memorials may be directed to the Ball Memorial Hospital Hospice.
