Eva was the youngest of the nine children of Gus Linden 'Taw' Kersey and his 2nd wife, Catherine Lockman. All of the children were born and raised in Polk County, Tennessee where Gus worked at a sawmill and farming. Gus had previously been married to Ella Hughes and they were parents of five children, Willie (Shipman), Frank (killed in a car wreck,) Estelene (Stafford), Clyde (Eva Mae Guy), and a baby Samuel, who died at the age of 5 months.

Ella died in August of 1924, and on October 6, 1924, Taw married Catherine Lockman, daughter of William Lockman. The children of Gus and Catherine were Bertha (Darnell), Irene (Waters), Leonard, John Henry, Pauline (Swanson), Betty (Cronan), Joyce (Shields, Redd), Loyce (Driver), and Eva Mae (Cronan, McKenzie, Smith.)

Eva married first Johnny Cronan and they had a son Harvey Lee. She married 2nd Robert Eugene McKenzie, son of Elisha T. McKenzie and Malinda Stanley, and they were parents of four children, Elish Thomas, Wilburn Hoyett, Melissa Ann and a baby Edna, who died at birth. Eva's 3rd marriage was to a Smith and they had a daughter, Yolanda, who married George Ballentine.

Eva was the granddaughter of Bruno Kersey who was killed when hit by a freight train in Cleveland, Tennessee 13 May 1935. Her grandmother was Christine Anna DeFord, daughter of Gabe and Zilla DeFord.
