For thirty years, Hiram Augustus Unruh managed Arcadia city founder Elias J. "Lucky" Baldwin's business affairs. Unruh helped Baldwin keep and increase his fortune, even after Baldwin's death in 1909. As executor of the estate, Unruh reportedly turned Baldwin's less than $1,000,000 legacy into $20,000,000 for Baldwin's heirs. He was considered a financial genius.

H.A. Unruh was born in Valparaiso, Indiana on November 1, 1845. He was a soldier in the Civil War, worked for Western Union Telegraph Co., Wells Fargo & Co., and the Central Pacific Railway, before his employment with Baldwin. He served as the Mayor of Arcadia from April, 1909 to April, 1914. His house was located at the southeast corner of First Avenue and Huntington Drive, which is currently the site of a Chevron gas station. He was buried in 1916 at Evergreen Cemetery in the Boyle Heights area of Los Angeles. This photo is from circa 1907.

Hiram Unruh, Baldwin's ranch manager and confidant, and Arcadia's second mayor (1909-1914) was interviewed in 1911. He acknowledged that it was he who laid out Arcadia into town lots.
He also brought the seeds for the city trees from San Francisco in a handbag, and made this a paradise of palm,
pepper and eucalyptus trees.
