Kenneth Sweazey, age 94, died Wednesday, November 9, 2011 at Bethel Care Center in St. Paul.
A Funeral Service will be held at 2 PM on Tuesday, November 22 at Dayton Avenue Presbyterian Church, 217 Mackubin Street, St. Paul, with the Reverend H. David Stewart and Dr. Robert Morris, officiating.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at church (1-2 PM.)
Private Interment, Acacia Park Cemetery.
Serving as pallbearers will be Paul Martin, Glenn Neske, Ken Pugh, Leon Oman, David Sannes, and Jim Vellenga.
Ken was born in Winona, Minnesota and lived in his home at 325 Ramsey Street in St. Paul since age 3. He had the honor of being the oldest church member who was baptized at Dayton Avenue Presbyterian Church. As a young man, he worked for short periods of time at various places as a clerk and lab assistant.
Ken loved walking and being outdoors. He walked every day to the Hill Reference Library where he was "a fixture" - people knew him even if they didn't know his name. He loved reading and was an avid history fan; he was especailly fond of talking about the old days and street cars. Ken was a "backward looking person", very much attached to the past. He loved starting a conversation with, "What do you think about..."
Ken hiked to Cooper's Grocery Store several times each week. And of course, he walked to church without fail each Sunday, where he sang in the choir for many many years and worshipped. During his later years, he championed falsetto as an underappreciated vocal talent! If there was a church meeting of any kind, you could count on Ken to attend.
Ken was exceedingly resourceful and frugal; he extolled the virtues of homemade window glazing made with sawdust. For decades, neighbors referred to him as the bachelor living in the large gray house, when in reality, it only had a smidge of paint hiding behind a drainpipe. Ken's home became a 2-year pilot project for the Metro Paint-A-Thon and underwent major exterior repairs, painting and landscaping / cleaning. Neighborhood volunteers slowly tackled Ken's first floor living space during the same period.
Ken was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew G. Sweazey and Bessie (Street); sister, Elaine Belle (Sweazey) Payne; niece, Barbara Ann (Payne) Williams.
He is survived by a niece, Sandra Mae Payne, along with great-nieces and great-nephews.
