ORRIN APSEY WAS SMOTHERED TO DEATH YESTERDAY MORNING.

PARIS TOWNSHIP FARM HAND WAS CAUGHT UNDER THE STACK WHEN IT TIPPED OVER - THE CORONER WAS CALLED.

ORRIN APSEY, a man 33 years old, of Paris township, met death by being suffocated under a heavy weight of straw that fell on him from a straw stack yesterday morning. He was the son of JOHN APSEY of Paris and worked for Clem Slater whose farm is not far from his father's. Yesterday morning Mr. Slater and Apsey went to the barn to feed the stock. Mr. Slater was feeding in the barn and Apsey went to get straw from the stack. When he was gone a few minutes, Mr. Slater wondered that he did not see nor hear him, and went to the stack. He saw at once what had happened. A large part of the stack had toppled over and Apsey was under it. He called for help and several men went to work at once to dig away the straw. It was frozen so it had to be chopped in order to move it. When Apsey was found he was dead. He had fallen with his neck across the top of a rail fence and the several hundred pounds of frozen straw that fell upon him had crushed the fence down and suffocated him. The cattle had eaten into the side of the stack and left it so it was toppling, and it fell just when Apsey was under it. Coroner Patterson went out and learned the facts in the case and decided an inquest was not necessary. Apsey must have died in a few seconds after the straw fell upon him. It was half an hour from the time the straw fell until the body was found.
