Funeral services will be 11 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 14, at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, 201 E. 4th Ave., Milan. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home with a Masonic service at 7 p.m. Burial will be at Rock Island National Cemetery, Arsenal Island, with military honors by American Legion 569/200 and VFW 1303. Memorials may be made to the family which will later be directed to the VA military hospitals.
Howard was born on July 27, 1926, in Rock Island, the son of Clyde Ellis and Mildred Hill Day. He entered the Navy in the fall of 1944, completing his boot training in Sep 1944. He served in the Navy from Aug 1944 to the fall of 1946 aboard the ship Roamer. On 29 Jun 1947, he was united in marriage to Janet Louise Cook. To this union two children were born. She passed away in Sep 2000. He later married Grace Havens in 2001.
He had been employed by the former International Harvester, Farmall Works Plant as a milwright from 1949 until his retirement.
Howard was a member of Milan Eureka Lodge No. 69, Milan American Legion 569, Order of the White Shrine, Chicago, Art Guild of Lake Havasu City, Ariz. He enjoyed creating metal sculpture and sold many of his creations at art shows and swap meets.
Survivors include his wife, Grace; children, Diane (Larry) Berg, Rock Island, Dan (Dyrine) Day, Tuscon, Ariz., step-children: Elizabeth Ann (Jim) Lee, Palm Dale, Calif., Cliff (Jody) Havens, Tama, Iowa.; several grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; sister, Maureen Bickle; brothers, Ray (Delores) Day, Earl (Marge) Day. He was preceded in death by his first wife, parents, and sister, Virginia.
