Captain James Barnes who was the first Commander of the Joe Gould Post is buried in the Rural Cemetery. He organized the 21st New York Independent Battery which was called into service at Oswego Sept 2 1862 and mustered out in at Syracuse Sept 1865. Captain Barnes was the grandson of Timothy Olmsted a fifer at the battle of Lexington and a veteran of the War of 1812. There are other members of the 21st battery buried near to Capt Barnes.
James Barnes Residence was not listed; 46 years old. Enlisted on 9/2/1862 at Oswego, NY as a Captain. On 9/2/1862 he was commissioned into NY 21st Light Artillery He was Mustered Out on 9/8/1865 at Syracuse, NY
