He organized the 21st New York Independent Battery which was called into service at Oswego Sept 2 1862 and mustered out in at Syracuse Sept 1865. Captain Barnes was the grandson of Timothy Olmsted a fifer at the battle of Lexington and a veteran of the War of 1812. There are other members of the 21st battery buried near to Capt Barnes.
