Edgar Jessup Hageman, Jr. July 22, 1929 - September 2, 2012 Edgar Jessup Hageman, Jr. passed from this life on September 2, 2012, in his home in McAllister, Montana, where he lived with Carol, his wife of 60 years. Edgar was born on July 22, 1929, in Bakersfield, California, to the loving parents of Mildred Arvilla and Edgar Jessup Hageman, Sr. He is survived by his wife, Carol Jean Hageman of McAllister, Montana; his son and daughter-in-law, Gregory S. Hageman and Jill Hageman of Bountiful, Utah; his son and daughter-in-law, Steven J. Hageman and Tracy Hageman of Bakersfield, California; and grandchildren Crystal Hageman of Boise, Idaho, Ashley Hageman of Bakersfield, California, Courtney Hageman of Portland, Oregon, and Nicholas Hageman of Bountiful, Utah. He is also survived by his sister, Irene Bower and her husband, Donald Bower; and niece, Carolynn Ford. Predeceased by his parents and nephew, David Valdes. Edgar was born and raised in Bakersfield, California, and graduated from Bakersfield High School in 1946. He went on to attend Bakersfield College in 1946 where he played varsity tennis, as well as achieved the distinguished honor of Assistant Commandant of the California Cadet Corps, with relative rank of Second Lieutenant, California National Guard. He transferred to San Jose State University where he completed two years of coursework and was a member of Delta Upsilon Fraternity. On August 30, 1952, he married his lifetime love, Carol Jean Babcock, daughter of Constance Babcock and owner of Babcock's Bookshop in Bakersfield, California. They moved to Aurora, Colorado in 1952, when he joined the United States Air Force, where he taught radar systems on the B-47 and B-52 bombers and achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was proud of his service to his country and honorably discharged in 1956. After completing his service to his country, he returned to California and attended California State University, Fresno, where he majored in Industrial Technology. He completed his undergraduate work as well as his Master's Degree. Edgar began his post-military career at South High School as a teacher in the Industrial Arts and Technology Department, later becoming the Chairman. He transitioned to Bakersfield College as Professor Emeritus where he served 31 years, many of which were spent as Department Chairman. Under his leadership, the opportunities and programs of the Industrial Technology Department expanded into a legacy. During his working years, Ed was an avid fisherman with a gift for always catching the biggest fish ... or telling the wildest fish story. He also enjoyed hunting with his favorite companion, Heidi dog. After retiring in 1989, Edgar and Carol enjoyed designing and building several homes in various locations, beginning with a beautiful home in Bear Valley Springs, California, and then moving to Cayucos on the California coast; later building a home in Cambria. They enjoyed fishing on their boat, the "Carol J", golfing, walking on the beach, and sharing time with friends and family. In earlier years, they enjoyed taking road trips with friends on their Honda Gold Wing motorcycle. Subsequently they moved back home to Bakersfield, only to take on a new adventure by moving to Gig Harbor, Washington. Their last moving endeavor was to the quaint little town of McAllister, MT, where they enjoyed the peace and tranquility of the area. Edgar Jessup Hageman, Jr. was a "Man's man." He genuinely cared about everyone, cherished his friends and loved his family dearly. He was a kind and gentle man, loved by everyone. His loving and generous soul was admired and cherished. It was a unique attribute that made him special. With a twinkle in his eye and a mischievous wry smile, he always stood his ground, but also loved to play practical jokes and tease with friends. Edgar faced life with optimism and a positive attitude. He was very proud of his family heritage in Kern County, where both his mother and father settled in Rosedale, establishing Hageman and Heath Roads. Last, but by far not least, Edgar Jessup achieved the honor of 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason and a member of the Bakersfield Lodge 224, maintaining a longstanding family tradition of generations before him. A Celebration of Life service for close friends and families will take place at a later date to be announced.
