Actress. She received notoriety in the mid-20th century as an American actress. Born Alexandra Zuck, she was the only child of a couple with Russian-ancestry, who divorced before she was five years old. She made her professional debut as a model at age four, was appearing in commercials by age twelve and at the age of fourteen made her first film for MGM Studios, “Until They Sail.” In 1958 she received a Golden Globe Award for “Most Promising Newcomer.” As a petite, innocent-looking blond, she became known for her wholesome roles in the 1959 films “Imitation of Life,” “Gidget” and “A Summer Place.” She had moderately successful film appearances in the 1960s but never returned to the heights of popularity she enjoyed in the previous decade. She worked for Universal Studios, Warner Brothers, and Columbia Pictures. She remained in the top-ten most popular actress rankings until 1963, but found it hard to transition from the innocent ingenue roles that she had been given to the more adult woman roles. While filming the movie “Come September,” she met the handsome singer and actor Bobby Darin. They were married on December 1, 1960, had a son, and divorced in 1967. After making some TV performances, her last performance was in the film drama “Lost” in 1983. Her 1950s stardom was celebrated in the song “Look at Me, I’m Sandra Dee” featured in the Broadway musical “Grease” and in 2004, her life with Darin was portrayed in the film “Beyond the Sea.” For most of her life she struggled with ill health battling alcoholism, depression, throat cancer, anorexia nervosa, and kidney ailments. Her son, Dodd Darin, wrote her biography, “Dream Lovers.”
