Rice - Gutshall

The wedding of Miss Vera Jean Gutshall, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Reuben Gutshall of Green Spring, and Jacob Williams Rice, son of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Rice of Shippensburg, took place at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 16, in the Ridge Church of the Brethren. The Rev. Robert L. Cocklin, pastor, performed the ceremony.

The bride, who was given in marriage by her brother, Mark Gutshall of Chambersburg, wore a street-length dress of white brocaded crepe. Her accessories were navy blue. She carried a white Bible and pom-poms.

Miss Dora Hamilton, the maid of honor, wore a blue crepe street-length dress and carried a bouquet of fall flowers.

Darius Rice of Green Spring served as best man. The ushers were Jacob Williams of Elizabethtown and William Redcay of Newville.

Richard McCurdy, soloist, sang "Ah, Sweet Mystery of Life," "I Love You Truly" and "Always." He was accompanied by Mrs. Alice Morgan at the piano. The traditional wedding marches were used.

Following the ceremony a reception, attended by 85 guests, was held in the church social room.

Mr. and Mrs. Rice will reside on Shippensburg R. R. 2.

NEWVILLE -- Jacob W. "Jake" Rice, 72, of 1050 Green Spring Road died Tuesday at home.

He retired from the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission's Newville maintenance division; owned and operated Jake's Auto Sales; was an Army veteran of World War II; a member of Green Spring Brethren in Christ Church and its Good Samaritan Sunday School Class; an usher at the church and at Roxbury Holiness Camp; and a member of Green Spring Hunting Camp, Potter County.

Surviving is his wife, Vera J. Gutshall Rice; two sons, Rodney E. of Shippensburg and Rondell J. of Walnut Bottom; three daughters, Marcia E. Johnson, Christine E. Gamble and Lisa K. Smith, all of Newville; a brother, Darius, and a sister, Iona Kronawetter, both of Shippensburg; and nine grandchildren.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in his church. Burial, with military honors, will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery, West Pennsboro Twp.

Jacob W. "Jake" Rice, 72, of 1050 Green Spring Road, Newville, died on Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2000, at home.

Born July 16, 1928, in Mount Joy, Lancaster County, he was a son of the late Edgar Eugene and Elizabeth Williams Rice.

He was a 48-year member of Green Spring Brethren in Christ Church, Newville, and a 45-year member of its Good Samaritan Sunday School Class. He also was an usher there and at Roxbury (Pa.) Holiness Camp.

Mr. Rice was retired with 20 years of service from Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission, Newville, having worked in the maintenance department For the past 45 years, he owned and operated Jake's Auto Sales, Newville.

He was a US. Army veteran of World War II.

For the past 28 years, he was a member of Green Spring Hunting Camp in Potter County.

Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Vera J. Gutshall Rice; two sons, Rodney E. of Shippensburg and Rondell J. of Walnut Bottom; three daughters, Marcia E. (Mrs. Bill ) Johnson, Christine E. (Mrs. Edward) Gamble and Lisa K. (Mrs. Randy) Smith, all of Newville; a brother and a sister, Darius Rice and Iona Kronawetter, both of Shippensburg; nine grandchildren; nieces; and nephews.

Service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Green Spring Brethren in Christ Church. The Revs. Terry Burton, Tom Drost and Larry Strouse will officiate. Burial, with military honors by Shippensburg American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars posts, will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery, near Newville.

Visitation will be from 7 to 9 pm. Friday and one hour before the service, at both times in the church.

Memorial contributions may be made to Green Spring Brethren in Christ Church, 1140 Green Spring Road, Newville 17241.
