Civil War Confederate Brigadier General. Dubbed the "Missouri Swamp Fox", at the outset of the war, he raised and led a battalion of cavalry as Brigadier General of the Missouri Guard. He commanded as many as 5000 troops and had great success using guerilla tactics on the Mississippi River and into the wilderness. In August 1863, he was captured at Pocahontas, Arkansas and taken prisoner to Fort Delaware. He was prisoner exchanged in July 1864, went to Mississippi and again took up his command. He finally surrendered his brigade on May 11, 1865, after General Lee's surrender. After the war, he was involved the Pony Express, telegraphic communication and civil engineering.
