Samuel D. Austin, age 95, of Mt. Vernon, passed away at 1:15 a.m. Monday, February 11, 2013 in Mt. Vernon.

Samuel was born August 28, 1917 in Keenes, Illinois the son of David L. and Lydia (McKinney) Austin. Sam served his country in the United States Army during WWII and was a member of the West Side Baptist Church.

He is survived by two daughters, Kay Hudson OF Winder, GA and Phyllis and husband Phil Richardson of Snellville, Georgia; many grandchildren, step-grandchildren, great-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren . He is also survived by his step sons, Orville Flowers and wife Ella and Allen Flowers; step daughter-in-law, Cindy Pugh who he lived with; and one step-daughter, Marilyn and husband Dale Mellott; several nieces and nephews.

Sam was preceded in death by his parents, first wife Mable Tyler Austin and second wife June (Pugh) Austin; one son, Sammie N. Austin; stepson, Gary Pugh; sisters, Pearl Weedman, Nelley Jackson, Stella Dickey and Freda Wright; one brother, Earl Pete Austin; step daughter Alice Flowers; step grandson, Donny Fuller.

Graveside Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday February 13, 2013 at Thomason Cemetery in Wayne City, Illinois with the Chaplain Ernie Collins officiating. Military Flag Presentation will be conducted by the American Legion Post Post 141 in Mt. Vernon.

For those who wish memorials may be made to the Newell Funeral Home and will be accepted at the Funeral Home.
