Edith Jean Cory Allen passed away on July 20, 2012, at the Blessed Trinity House in Corpus Christi, Texas.

Jean was born December 12, 1924, in Sonora, Texas to the parents of Victor Louis Cory, a botanist, and his wife Frances Zenobia Brian Cory. Jean spent her childhood years on the Texas A&M Ranch Experiment Station located between Sonora and Rock Springs, Texas. She attended high school in Dallas, Texas, and graduated in 1944 from the University of Texas in Austin with a bachelor of arts degree in English, History, and Psychology.

Jean married William Rhymes Allen of Jackson, Mississippi in 1944 and they became the proud parents of five sons. For 24 years Jean was a full-time wife and mother. When all five of her sons were in college or graduate school, Jean began a career as a social worker with the Mississippi Department of Public Welfare in Jackson, Mississippi. After three years of service, she accepted a training position in the Welfare Department, and became responsible for the training of staff at all levels. Jean later became the Equal Opportunity Employment Officer for the Welfare Department where she developed legally defensible evaluation documents for all staff positions. In addition, Jean organized and taught management workshops for supervisory staff throughout the state of Mississippi.

Jean was active in volunteer work all of her life. She taught Sunday school, was a Cub Scout den mother, and a team mother for her sons' baseball, football and basketball teams. Jean held several PTA offices and chaired fund raisers in two states. Jean was a member of the Mississippi Genealogical Society and was interested and active in genealogical research. She was a member of the Rosalie D.A.R. in Mississipi, and after returning to Texas became a member of an Austin D.A.R. Chapter. Jean was also active in the Lago Vista Women's Club n which she held various offices, including president.

Jean joined the United Methodist Church when she was fifteen. In Lago Vista, Texas, she was a member of the Rolling Hills Community Church where she served on the Administrative Board and was president of the United Christian Women. Jean was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Corpus Christi, Texas during the last years of her life.

Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Bill. She is survived by five sons and their families: Dr. William R. Allen of Corpus Christi, Texas; Dr. Michael D. Allen of Murfreesboro, Tennessee; Dr. Terry S. Allen of San Marcos, Texas; Mr. Kelly B. Allen of Houston, Texas; Mr. Cory A. Allen of Birmingham, Alabama.

Jean is survived by ten grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, and her husband's family of Jackson, Mississippi.
