CAPTAIN, 31 AAF BOMB SQUADRON, 2 BOMB

Co-Pilot of US Army Air Corps B-17E Flying
Fortress #41-2667. Killed in a crash when the
aircraft failed to gain altitude on takeoff
from the airdrome at Whenuapai, Auckland,
New Zealand for a flight to Laverton, Victoria,
Australia during World War II.

All eleven aboard died when the cargo of
bombs detonated after the the plane had
impacted the ground and caught fire.

The personnel killed were:

2nd Lt. Edward H Hoffman, Navigator
TSgt. Charles P Brunson, Crew
SSgt. Harry Cohn, Crew

Pvt. Curtis Childers, Crew
Lt. Edwin W Hurst, Passenger, US Navy
Capt. Jean Clovis Alexandre Gilbert, Passenger, Free French Navy (Noumea)
