He was born in New Bedford, MA on April 7, 1917, the son of Clarence A. and Lila T. Bates. While in Bloomfield, he was a member of the First Congregational Church and served as a choir member and chairman of the Music Committee.
Besides his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Barbara B. Tyler and her husband David A. Tyler, III, and Suzanne R. Bates, all of Loxahatchee, FL; two sons, Barrett A. Bates of Brunswick, ME and Byron D. Bates Jr. of West Bath, ME; and five grandchildren, David A. Tyler, IV, Jesse B. Tyler, Elizabeth R.D. Bates, Olivia C. Bates and Everett K. Bates.
A memorial service will be announced at a later date. Interment will be in Rural Cemetery, New Bedford, MA.
