"At the age of seventeen he was thrown, by the death of his father, upon his own resources. His opportunities for acquiring an education had been very poor, for common schools of that day were very inferior to those of the present time, and his father's straightened means could furnish him no further advantages than these afforded. He showed, however, at an early age, that he possessed both industry and perseverance, and the lessons learned in the school of adversity are not easily forgotten. When he was nineteen years of age he commenced driving the stage from Greenfield to New Salem, Mass., and afterward from Greenfield to Ashfield. In 1832 he purchased the latter route, and continued driving the stage between Greenfield and Ashfield, with an extension to South Adams, for four years. In 1836 he gave up stage driving, purchased a farm and leased the hotel in Ashfield. He soon sold his lease, but retained the farm until 1851, when he removed to Berkshire county and engaged in the hotel and livery business. At the expiration of two years he returned to Ashfield, where he resided until 1869, with the exception of two years passed in Shelburne Falls. He then removed to Northampton, where they have since resided. By industry, perseverance and economy, he has acquired a competency, and won the respect of his fellow-townsmen. He has been a member of the Congregational church since 1841, and has filled many public offices in the towns in which he has resided. In 1855 he was elected a director of Conway National Bank of Conway, Mass. He has also been connected with the Shelburne Falls National Bank of Shelburne Falls, Mass. and with the Hampshire Co. National Bank of Northampton, as director and vice-president, holding the latter position at the present time (1893). He is also president of the Hampshire Savings Bank of Northampton and director of the Home National Bank of Holyoke, Mass. He has been employed extensively as executor and administrator upon estates, and as trustee and assignee in various towns in Hampshire and Franklin counties, having settled upwards of one hundred estates. They have seven children born in Ashfield"
