Mathias Stephan (1786-1876) was born at Grossbreitenbach, Hessen, Germany, the son of Christian and Eva Elisabeth Schmetz Stephan. He fought in the war of 1812, and was in the Army 8 years. He married twice, first to Anna Barbara Joest, who died in 1830, and then to Mary Ann Weber, (1810-1853) daughter of Leonhart Emig and Elisabeth Weber. He was the father of fifteen children, 1820-1853, ten of whom he had with Mary Ann. The family immigrated to the United States in 1830 and settled at Carlisle, Pennsylvania. They moved to Little Washington, Pennsylvania, ca. 1837. He died at Canton, Ohio. Descendants listed lived in Ohio, Kansas, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and elsewhere. Some descendants spell their surname Stephens.
