Ralph Eugene Guthrie died March 3, 2003, at his home in Cherokee. He was 87.A beloved member of the Cherokee community, Ralph Guthrie was known by all as a good man. Humble, honest and hard working, he was a man of God. He enjoyed his work as a businessman and cattleman, but best of all he loved being a husband, father and grandfather. Time spent with his family was most important to him. He loved his wife, children, grandchildren, family and friends and shared many important lessons about family, life and love. His most important principles were to love God first and to be humble. He always taught his family, "humility is the most important word in the dictionary."
Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery in Iuka, Miss. He was a member of Cherokee First United Methodist Church.Survivors include his beloved wife, Bettye Haines Guthrie of Cherokee; two daughters, JoAnne Waldrep and her husband, Don, Cherokee, and Jeanene Lyell and her husband, Roger, of Madison, Miss.; one sister, Ruth Guthrie of Cherokee; five grandchildren, Donnette Waldrep Putman and her husband, Greg, of Athens, Mona Waldrep Key and her husband, David, of Nashville, Tenn., Leigh Allison Lyell Love and her husband, Hugh, of Charlotte, N.C., Ralph Daniel Waldrep of Cherokee, and William Ralph Lyell of Hoboken, N.J.; and one great-grandchild, David Gist Key Jr.He was preceded in death by his former wife, Ruth Hamm Guthrie; his parents, Clint and Annie Guthrie; and a sister, Rebecca Guthrie McCulloch.
