He was the son of John Hamilton Cunningham and Ann Buie, he married Martha Minerva Tharp on 5 Jun 1867 in Natchitoches, LA. He was a confederate soldiier at the age of 15 and rose to the rank of Major before the end of the war.

He then studied law at LSU Law School, then moved to Texas and was soon in News paper work in St. Louis, and later in London, Washington and finally Baltimore where he was the managing editor of the Herald, until 1901. Later he was Judge of the "Appeal tax court"

He also received an appointment as Col. in the Egyptian Army.

At the time of his death the cemetery paper work was signed by his Daughter "Martha Cunningham (aka Marta) with her address as Notre Dame College, Charles Street City Executrix"
