On January 21, 1868, John Wallace of Scotland, married Sarah Elizabeth "Sallie" Hopkins (daughter of Willis and Margrett Hopkins). John decided he wanted to go to Texas and he persuaded Willis H. Hopkins to go with him. So in the fall of 1869 John, Sallie and the Willis Hopkins family embarked at Savannah, Georgia and after about two weeks at sea they landed at Galveston, Texas. William (Jack) Jackson Hopkins was married and stayed in Georgia. John Wallace and Willis Hopkins families spent some time in the Bluff Springs area and both bought undeveloped land south of Austin on the Old San Antonio Road near the Boggy Creek Cemetery, now known as Masonic Cemetery. They cleared the land and built their homes, where they lived over fifty years. The Hopkins' house was torn down, but the Wallace house was rebuilt or rearranged and retained much of the original house.
