U.S. Congressman. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1801 and set up a law practice in Lancaster, Ohio. He was a member of the Ohio State House of Representatives, (1803, 05-07), a judge of the Ohio Supreme Court and a Major General in the Ohio State Militia. In 1817, he was elected as a Federalist to the Fifteenth and Sixteenth Congresses, serving until 1821 and elected as an Adams-Clay Republican to the Eighteenth, Nineteenth and Twentieth Congresses, serving (1823-29). An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he continued the practice of law until his death at age 63.
