US Congressman. Born in Hartford County Connecticut he was sent, by the Federal government, to the newly admitted state of Ohio to perform surveying while also serving as the commissioned receiver of the area land office. His political career began when he was elected to the state house of representatives in 1806. He also gained prominence as an aide to Ohio governor Return Meigs , during the War of 1812 From 1809 to 1817 he also worked as a court clerk and a justice of the peace. In 1817 he resigned those positions after being elected to represent Ohio's third Congressional district from 1817 to 1819. He lost his reelection bid, but was elected again to serve in Congress from 1821 to 1823 before losing another reelection bid. He returned to Ohio where he became a trustee for Ohio University and president of the Bank of Marietta. He died in the village of Harmar which today is a part of Marietta, Ohio.
