MRS. MARY ELLEN MOORE JACKSON,
who died at her home in Newell
township, July 30, was one of the early
pioneer settlers of Buena Yista
county, locating in 1868, 34 years ago,
where she died at the age of 65.
She was a native of upper Canada,
the daughter of William and Eliza
Moore, who were members of the established
church of England of which
the deceased became a member. In
1868 she became the wife of William
Jackson and after a residence of seven
years in Canada located on the homestead
that has been her home during
the most of her life. She endured all
the privations incident to life on the
frontier before the arrival of the Illinois
Central Railway, and was not
completely discouraged during the
70's when grasshoppers visited this
section and hard times affected the
entire country. She was animated
by the hope that coming days and
events would be better and lived long
enough to see the realization of her
expectations in this respect. The
contrast presented to her view in the
appearance of this section of the
country in 1902 in comparison with
its appearance 34 years ago was marvelous.
She was a resident of this
country two years before there was not a
building erected at Storm Lako or
Newell. The country was a pathless
and uncultivated waste when in the
fall of the year the cabin and stock of
the few scattered settlers were exposed
to the relentless prairie fire,
the most dreaded of all the foes of
the early settler.
Her family cousisited of five sons
and two daughters. Mary married
George Scott, a farmer, and lives at
Fonda. William, a painter, married
Elizabeth Sage and lives at Newell.
George, Elisha, Arthur, Eliza Jane
and Herbert are at home.
The deceased has two brothers and
two sisters living in the province of
Ontario. Her sister, Eliza Jane Pinkerton,
spent two months at her bedside
during her last illness.
The funeral services were held at
the Congregational church on Thursday
afternoon and were conducted by
Rev. R. E. Fljckinger, of Fonda.
