The following is paraphrased from an article in the "Review Herald" published shortly after his death:
Randy was working his first day on the job when he accompanied fellow camp counselor David Meyers and a group of youngsters to Convict Lake on an outing. Four boys fell through the thin ice out on the lake, with one being able to get himself out. The counselors rushed out to try and save the boys and fell through the ice themselves. Two more would-be rescuers also fell through the ice. Three boys and all four heroes attempting to save them died in this tragedy. Randy left behind a wife and young son, as well as a daughter from a previous marriage.
