Born in Norfolk, VA, she was predeceased by her loving parents, Marie Fields Tennis and Clyde William Tennis. She is survived by her son, William Starke of Norfolk and her daughter, Julie Ann Starke of FL; and her special cousins, Jack Baker of Richmond, Bill C. Tennis of Hampton, Ann Huffman of Newport News, Richard Tennis of Virginia Beach and Marcial Chappell of Williamsburg.
Ann attended Maury High School and was a member of the "Lost Class of 1959". She always remembered those high school years that gave her a lifelong passion for learning and education. She attained five college degrees and spent a thirty-seven year career designing, building and testing software systems. She retired from Sperry Marine in Charlottesville, VA in 2004. She was a member of the Jamestowne Society and had a Merchant Marine Captain's license. She participated for many years in inshore and ocean sailing and was captain and navigator of the first all-female crew to compete in the Annapolis to Bermuda Ocean Race. She spent a year sailing the Carribbean aboard her boat, "William Tell". Her interests included history, painting, genealogy, amateur radio (N4VIJ), boats and the sea.
