Martha Ann Hill was born sometime between 1810-1814 in Wake County, NC, the daughter of Green Hill & Nancy Geddy Mitchell of Surry Co, VA who removed to Wake County in the early 1800's.

Martha married William Thomas Bain (1793-1867) son of Scottish immigrant Donald Bain & Frances Eliza Hall of Brunswick County, NC on September 4, 1833. The couple resided in Raleigh where the operated a well-known boarding house/hotel. They would become parents of 5 known surviving children:

* Elizabeth Frances Bain PARTIN (1834-1907)
* Mary Ann "Mollie" Bitting (1838-1917)
* Donald William Bain (1841-1892)
* Julia Green Bain (1844-1922)
* Rev. Thomas Hare Bain (1845-1927)
* Maria L. Bain (1852-1856).

Martha's husband was a prominent citizen (and slaveowner) of Raleigh who had lived in Pittsboro, Chatham County, before making the Capitol city his home. He was the son of Donald Bain of Glasgow, Scotland who came to America just after the Revolutionary War, settling near Wilmington, NC; and there in 1785 he was married to Frances Eliza Hall, daughter of Dr. Thomas Hall, Jr and Lucy Ann Green. William T. Bain was educated at the famous Bingham School, and for a while was engaged in teaching school. He was one of the most distinguished Masons of the state, and from 1836 to his death in 1867, with the exception of 4 short years, he occupied the position of Secretary of the Masonic Grand Lodge of North Carolina. Today, the William T. Bain Masonic Lodge #231 in Raleigh is named in his honor.

Martha Hill Bain died in 1865. Her busand, William Thomas Bain died just two years later in 1867, and is BELIEVED TO BE BURIED HERE, but his name does not appear on cemetery records compiled to date.

Son, Donald William Bain became treasurer for the State of North Carolina and followed in his father's footsteps witht the Masons, being appointed Grand Secretary of the Grand Lodge of North Carolina following his father's death.

All of their children married. Daughter Mollie and son, Thomas, both married into the Bitting family, marrying children of Anthony & Mary Bitting.
