Ernest John Sievers, the
child of August Sievers and
Wilhelmena Weber Sievers,
was born in Grant Township,
Buena Vista County, Iowa, on
May 23, 1898. In infancy he
was received into the Kingdom
of God through the Sacrament
of Holy Baptism in
Zion Lutheran Church, Storm
Lake. As a youth he became
a communicant member of the
Lutheran Church through the
rite of confirmation also in
Zion Lutheran Church. On
February 19, 1923 he was unii
ted in holy wedlock to Helga
Andersen in Storm Lake,
Iowa. This union was blessed
with two children, Ardith and
Jerold. For many years he lived
in the Newell Community
being engaged in business in
the town of Newell. He was
widely known throughout the
area for his honesty and integrity.
He was active in community
affairs as indicated by
the fact that he served as a
member of the Town Council
for some 25 years, was a
member of the fire department
for some 35 years serving
as fire chief for a number
of these years, and was also
a member of the Newell School Board for fourteen
years. He was also an active
and faithful member of St.
Peter's Lutheran Church serving
in the capacity of trustee
and elder for more than 25
years. At the time of his death
he was serving as the chairman
of the building committee
of his church. He was a faithful
husband and a devoted
father. He was highly respected
by all who knew him.
For several years he suffered
failing health, but in the
past year his condition worsened
rapidly until last Saturday
morning, November 16,
1963, it pleased the Lord to
call him to his eternal home.
He was preceded in death
by his parents, by an infant
brother, and by one sister,
Mrs. Mabel Herzberg.
He is survided by his wife,
Helga; two children, Mrs. Ardith
Shirk of Newell and Jerold
Sievers of Newell; by four
grandchildren, Kelli, Bart, Paul
and Leslie Shirk; by four brothers,
Theodore Sievers of
Bellflower, California; Edward
Sievers of Slayton, Minnesota;
Otto Sievers of Storm Lake,
Iowa, and Harry Sievers of
Alta, Iowa; by two sisters,
Mrs. Malinda Hemmingsen of
Storm Lake, Iowa, and Mrs.
Meta Buswell of Chippewa
Falls, Wisconsin; and by many
relatives and friends.
He attained the age of 65
years, 5 months, and 24 days
