Vernard E. (Tom) Lord
March 04, 2012

Vernard E. Lord, 97, a life long resident of Lyman, better known as Tom by friends and family, died on March 4, 2012 with his daughters by his side at the Evergreen Nursing Home in Saco.

Tom was born at home on May 24, 1914 the son of Fred and Grace (Kimball) Lord and went to the one room school house at Jackson's Corner in Lyman. From an early age, Tom knew the value of hard work; working alongside his family in the Lord's Mill. He began cutting timber in the woods and learned how to operate and repair the equipment that was used. With is early training and natural abilities of working with wood, Tom worked in West Kennebunk for National Woodworking Furniture and Cabinets. He retired as a finish carpenter from F.M. Murray Inc. in Biddeford. Tom also worked for the town plowing snow and doing road maintenance.

Tom married his sweetheart and soul mate Barbara Merrill on May 31, 1938. They were blessed with two daughters and one son. It wasn't only but ten years later that the '47 fire swept through southern Maine and destroyed the family farm. Tom worked side-by-side with other young men fighting that great fire. He was also one of the founding members of the Goodwin Mills Fire Department. Tom served as the assistant chief of the department from 1966 – 1981 and was instrumental in working on the fire station addition in 1978.

Tom loved to go camping and fishing. He and Barbara traveled in their R.V. and enjoyed the beauty of the great outdoors. Tom appreciated antiques and could repair just about anything built from wood. His cabinets, furniture and chairs have become family heirlooms. He even tinkered with his Model A tractor.

Tom will be remembered as being a devoted husband and father. He gave of his time and talents to his hometown; often not wanting attention or recognition. He loved his community and believed in helping those that needed an extra hand.

He is survived by his two daughters, Hope Bragdon of Lyman; and Brenda Meserve of Saco; 7 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, 4 great-great grandchildren and his daughter-in-law, Marjorie Lord and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife Barbara and by his son, Donald Lord and by two sisters, Gladys Burbank and Edith Davis, and two sons-in-law.

A Graveside Service will be held later in the spring at Chadbourne Cemetery in Lyman.

Memorial donations may be made to the Goodwin Mills Firefighters Association, 481 Goodwin Mills Rd., Lyman, ME 04002.

The Autumn Green Funeral Home is respectfully handling arrangements.
