Marine Sgt Hays was assigned to Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron 352 (VMGR-352), the "Raiders," Combined Task Force 58, Marine Corps Air Station, Miramar, California. He was killed in the crash of a KC-130 fueling plane. Nathan grew up in the small farming town of Wilbur, Washington. He graduated from Wilbur High School in 1999 where he played linebacker and tight end for the football team, and was a hard worker in the weight room. Nathan was also a team captain and won all-league honors. When he graduated from Wilbur High, he didn't feel he was ready for college so he joined the Marines. He was an Eagle Scout and a classic car buff. He was the type of person who was strong, determined and seemed invincible; he wasn't afraid of anything. He was a great kid who loved being a Marine and returned to his hometown a couple of times and appeared in uniform for speeches to students at the school. Nathan was fearless and a warrior.
