Moses (Mose) S. Smith (1869-1928). The youngest son of George W. Smith (1813-1881) and Martha Smith (no relation) (1822-1921).He became sole owner and publisher of the Newman, Illinois, "Newman Independent" newspaper in 1894 and continued its operation until his death in 1928. His first marrage (1887) was to Lola Montez Zink (1869-1888) of Newman in Douglas County, Illinos. She died at an early age. They had a son, Leroy Z. Smith (1888-1888). He died at 3 months of age. Mose's second marrage was to Irabella Smith Root (1868-1950). Their children: Hughes Blake (H.B.) Smith (1895-1978) Harriet Elizabeth Smith (b. 1900); and Martha Smith (Root)(1904-1952).
