John Rozet Drexel Sr was a prominent socialite is New York City, Newport and later Paris. He was born to Anthony Drexel, founder of Drexel University, and he grew up a lavish lifestyle in his hometown of Philadelphia. He inherited more than $23 million from his father. He married Alice Gordon Troth, who had grown up a life of complete excess and was accustomed to luxury. They had a son, John R Drexel II, who grew up at the family's homes in New York City and Philadelphia and their summer cottage in Newport, called Fairholme. At the start of the Great Depression, Alice dragged John to Paris, where they bought a large townhouse and filled it with beautiful French antique furniture. They developed a large art collection and had a large addition added to house it. The collection grew so much that they bought the townhouse next door to house it. They also demolished the home behind them and built a large garden. John died in Paris on 1935, surrounded by the family he loved.
