Author. Born in Turin, Italy, he was a member of Anti-fascist resistance during World War II. When captured, he was deported by the Nazis to the Auschwitz Concentration Camp in Poland in 1944, spending eleven months there until it was liberated by the Soviet Red Army in 1945. He wrote of his experiences, and his books detailed the atrocities of the Nazis in the death camps in works such as "Se Questo è un Uomo" (If This Is a Man), "La Tregua," "Storie Naturalli," "Vizio di Forma," "La Ricerca delle Radici," "Se non Ora Quando" and "I Sommersi e I Salvati". In 1987, he commmited suicide, falling down the stairs in his house of Rome, Italy. In his grave in Turin is marked the number of recognition tattooed in his arm by Nazis in Auschwitz.
