*Leonard volunteered on August 5, 1847 at Shawnee, La Salle County, Illinois to serve in the Mexican War. On December 29, 1847 rolls at Shawnee, Illinois show him in the Ist Illinois Regiment. On April 14, 1848 he was mustered in with a detail of recruits at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri. In June and August 1848 he was on duty at Las Vegas, New Mexico. In history, there was a three part campaign against Mexico, the 3rd being to hold New Mexico and California as retribution against Mexico for the military advancement against Texas, which had joined the United States as a state in 1845. On September 20, 1848, while his company was returning East, and while fording Big Cow Creek in central Kansas, Leonard's horse fell on his right leg, causing a compound fracture. On October 14, 1848 Leonard was honorably discharged with his company under Colonel Newby at Alton, Illinois.
