Maude Ekstrand
Maude McDonald Ekstrand, 99, of New London, formerly of Mount Pleasant, died Wednesday, March 1, 2000, at the home of her son in New London.
Born Aug. 5, 1900, in Des Moines County, she was the daughter of Milton T. and Algalena Ivonette Williams McDonald. She married Fred Otis Ekstrand on June 24, 1926, in New London. He died July 8, 1972.
Mrs. Ekstrand was a 1918 graduate of New London High School and a 1925 graduate of Iowa Wesleyan College, majoring in education. She was a math and history teacher in Underwood, S.D., North English, Tipton, New London, Fort Madison, Boone, Toledo Juvenile Home and Mount Pleasant, retiring in 1968.
She was a member of New London Presbyterian Church, Pi Beta Phi sorority, TTT society, and PEO Sisterhood A, of which she was past president. She was a life member of American Contract Bridge League, played the piano for silent movies, sang at weddings and funerals, and sang and traveled with the Iowa Wesleyan College quartet. She loved singing, reading and was an avid bridge player.
Survivors include one son, David C. Ekstrand of New London; one daughter, Doris Hutton of Canton, Ill.; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one nephew.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, one son and three grandchildren.
Her body has been cremated.
The memorial service for Mrs. Ekstrand will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 12, at Elliott Chapel, New London, with the Rev. David Mixon officiating. Burial will be in the Burge Cemetery, New London.
A memorial has been established for the New London Rescue Unit.
