James Henry Bratten enlisted May 10, 1861 at Edenton, Chowan, NC in the same regiment in which his father had a commission [Co. A. 1st NC Regiment, CSA]. James Henry Bratten was wounded at the last battle of Gettysburg, PA.
After the war, James Henry Bratten married and later moved to Baltimore, MD, from whence in 1876 he joined the United States Navy for four years. He was on the USS Dispatch in the engineer department and stationed at Constantinople during the Truke-Russian War as a tender to the US Minister. He told his wife that he gave four years of his life to the South, and four years in the Navy to the North, and he was sure that God would not hold anything against him.
