Educator. Born Amelia McDevitt in North Philadelphia, she graduated from John W. Hallahan Catholic High School and attended Immaculata for one year before entering the Convent of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. She taught mathematics and chemistry at Shenandoah Catholic High School for seven years until joining the faculty at Immaculata. Sister earned a bachelor's degree from Immaculata and a master's degree and a doctorate in biochemistry from the Institutum Divi Thomae in Cincinnati. While teaching at Immaculata, she was involved in cancer research and published articles in scientific journals. She served on the board of Cabrini College and on the executive committee of the Foundation for Independent Colleges. She was appointed president of Immaculata University in 1955. The school was established in the 1920s by the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, as a women's college. Lourdes had taught chemistry at the school for 10 years before becoming president. During her 17 year presidency of the college, enrollment doubled and seven buildings were constructed. Known for her accessibility, the lounge in Alumnae Hall is named the Open Door in honor of Lourdes. In 1973, she became principal of Archbishop Carroll High School in Radnor, the first woman to be principal of a local Archdiocesan High School. From 1982 to 2000, she was liaison for the area schools staffed by the IHMs, and then assisted teachers at St. Laurence School in Drexel Hill until 2002.
