The third child of War of 1812 veteran, Lieutenant Henry S. VanDerCook and grandson of Revolutionary War veteran, Simon VanDerCook. His mother was Margery LESTER. Abraham married his wife, Mary FORSYTH, 23 October, 1831 at Huron, Erie Co., OH. They had six children, all born in Ohio: James F. Vandercook (1834-1904, married Julia Emily BURDICK, one daughter), Amelia Vandercook (1840-1905, married Charles Michael FOUKE, six children), Wesley Vandercook (1843-1945, married Elizabeth "Libby" CLAGG, seven children), Susan Vandercook (1847-1865), Elizabeth Mary Vandercook (1849-1925, married Frederick S. DUNNING, one son) and Mary Elizabeth Vandercook (1849-1852).
